St Pius X Primary School Heidelberg West

Since its foundation in 1954, St Pius X School has had a proud history of providing quality education to the communities of West Heidelberg and Heidelberg Heights.

Our school is well placed to assist children meet the demands of modern society by offering small class sizes, a broad range of programs, expert teaching and modern facilities.

Above all, our students receive the care and support that only a small school can provide. A strong sense of community, characterised by positive relationships, is the foundation upon which our school is built. This genuine concern for all is given expression through comprehensive learning programs and strong home/school links.

Our Parish

St Pius X Parish

The Parish was established in 1953 although it had been in the planning stage from as early as 1946. The first Parish Priest was Fr George Maher and the school was established by the M.S.C. sisters. Athlete accommodation for the 1956 Olympics was built in West Heidelberg and after the Olympics the site was used for housing resulting in an influx of people into the area. The population of St Pius X School grew significantly and the Parish expanded and included a variety of groups, sacramental programs, social and sporting activities.

The community was built with the Parish and the School at the centre and many of the current older parishioners and their children were students at the School.  People, past and present, have fond memories and experiences of St Pius X, and a wonderful legacy has been passed on for us to build on, today, and into the future.

Our Beginnings

STPUIS_X_HEIDELBERG-WEST-289.jpg

St Pius X School Heidelberg West opened in February 1954. It is located on the same site as the Church, about 10 kilometres north of the city of Melbourne. The Missionary Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus (MSC Sisters) were in charge of the school from its opening until 1985 when the first lay principal was appointed. The school has an interesting history dating back to the time of the 1956 Olympic Games, with many athletes and their families remaining in the local area. The school population at this time swelled to 1,200. The legacy of the MSC Sisters continues with their presence in the parish and school and their generosity in allowing the school to have their stained glass windows as part of our new building.

School Prayer

God, our Father,

You filled St Pius X,

the patron of our school,

with wisdom, kindness and love for others.

Help us to follow his example so that we will grow in love and care for each other and one day live together in Heaven.

We make our prayer through Christ Our Lord,

Amen
