Kids Thrive-KicArts

Kids Thrive-KIC’Arts

KIC’Arts is a child-lead community change program resulting in art work and performances that concentrate on a particular value focus. Performance-maker Alex Walker Alex Walker and photographer, Carla Gottgens from organisation Kids Thrive, worked with the kids each Tuesday to develop their skills in arts philanthropy. The sessions culminated in a performance at the Banyule Community Health Centre.

The 3/4 and 5/6 classes at St Pius X throughout Term 2 & 3, successfully prepared and organised a community advocacy for change inquiry, in partnership with Kids Thrive. The event KiCArts performed on September 21 at Banyule Community Health Centre. KicArts is a  child-led community change program resulting in art work and performances that concentrate on a particular value focus. The children formed 4 groups:the 3/4 Cultural Ninjas team who focussed on cultural respect and sharing, the 3/4 Recycalinos team who focussed on recycling, reusing and rehoming, the 5/6 Save the Earth team who focussed on awareness of plastic’s effect on the environment and the 5/6 Includers who focussed on Diversity and Inclusion in West Heidelberg.

Performance maker Alex Walker and Photographer Carla Gottgens from organisation KidsThrive  worked with the kids on each Tuesday to develop their skills in arts philanthropy. First they learnt about their capacity to be catalysts for change in their community; they honed skills in identifying handy people, doing research through conversation, making phone calls to potential community partners, running interviews and lots more. Once community partners were secured, the art making got underway with each group devising a project that would help spread light on the issue at hand. Our amazing community partners whi worked with the kids are Roger from the Salt Foundation, Suzanne Crellin from 3081 Angels, Pete from Friends of Darebin Creek, and India from the Social Planning and Community Team at Banyule City Council.

We  witnessed the kids grow exponentially over the weeks! Seeing their ownership over these projects was a thrilling experience and we loved how much they steered the ship and realised their power to effect change around them.  A big thanks to brilliant St Pius X teachers Laura and Christine for being on this special journey with us! The project which was a great chance for everyone to learn more about the issues that need our attention in the community and to celebrate the kids who are passionate about creating good change!
